ETP Technology Material development (Bergen op Zoom)
The ETP Technology material development team of SABIC develops polycarbonate based materials and other engineering thermoplastics. Using materials science, process technology and product processing material solutions are developed.

Polycarbonate is a key material for the automobile industry, in building and construction and for consumer electronics. As polycarbonate is a durable plastic, it generally does not end up in house hold waste streams. However, its material properties make it an excellent candidate for recycling. The challenge is to collect and sort polycarbonate at its end of life and have a steady supply for recycling. For this specific internship (6-9 months), we are looking for a candidate to look into how to set-up the value chain of polycarbonate post-consumer waste streams. With this life cycle analysis (LCA) we aim to identify recyclable polycarbonate sources and the steps needed to convert this back into raw materials.

Within this assignment, you will be able to contribute to establishing a first footing for SABIC in the mechanical recycling industry and grow it.

 Assignment

  • Collect quantitative information on polycarbonate use and end of life pathways, using public sources, as well as internal contacts
  • Map end of life value chain for polycarbonate based products
  • Identify and reach out to actors in value chain
  • Identify opportunities to make the PC process more circular
  • Make a quantitative and qualitative statement about the sustainability improvement of these opportunities
